LIFE IN GENERAL is a collection of essays reflecting on experiences familiar to women in midlife the empty nest, becoming a grandparent, long term marriage, caring for aging parents, downsizing a home, changes in the workplace, finding a passion for living. Life in General an American woman reflects on midlife in the 21st century eBook Becca Rowan Reviews

At the time I picked up Becca Rowan's book, Life in General, I had gone through several years of caring for aging parents, their ultimate passing, the guilt that followed that I hadn't done enough, together with the overwhelming stresses of marriage, children and grandchildren. I was only a few pages into the book when I had to stop and take a breath, it was like she knew each and every emotion that I was feeling. Ms. Rowan has a wonderful ability to make an emotional connection with the reader that brings about a certain comfort in knowing you are not alone in this aging process we call life.
I thoroughly enjoyed Rowan's reflections on life - these snippets forced me to think more deeply about everything from aging parents to dogs to the way I love my home. The briefness of the chapters let me celebrate each piece as a morsel, rich chocolate for the heart. Highly recommend.
In another time and place, Becca Rowan would be that neighborhood lady down the street with whom you sit and chat over a morning cup of coffee and explore life's ups and downs. In Life in General, Ms. Rowan has a finger on the pulse of today's mid-life American woman, by exploring the unique challenges she faces as she transitions to a new role - that of looking back more often than looking forward. It is a bittersweet time, but Ms. Rowan approaches it with warmth, kindness and gentle humor, finding beauty in simple, every day gifts ... a juicy ripe blueberry, flying a kite, and most importantly, the joy and sorrow attached to being a mother, daughter, wife and niece. This book is compiled from blog posts that Ms. Rowan wrote over a period of several years, so each chapter is the perfect length to read and think about when you just have a few moments to spare.
This book was a gift from a good friend with whom I've shared many conversations about the joys, trials, and meaning of life over the years. It's as if Becca Rowan knew what was in our heads and hearts. In “Life in General,” she captures the sweetness, struggle, and significance of many aspects of life - relationships, home, family, life stages, and change.

I confess that at times I got a little teary reading it. Most often, I found myself smiling and saying "right on" in response.

I enjoyed both the author's warm, witty style and the book's format - easily digestible short articles with a nugget of insight in each - perfect for those of us (most of us!) who sneak in a little reading time here and there.
Sometimes a book hits you at just the right moment, the time when one is dealing with an aging parent or retirement or a change in life circumstances. There are moments when it can feel as though you are alone. And then you read "Life in General."

Becca Rowan's essays cover the gamut of life in middle age. She has walked through retirement and returning to work, seeing her parents age and then die, serving as breadwinner when her husband is laid off, watching a child grow up, have a family and move far away. She has also experienced great joys and delight, savored the delight in reading works well written (and apparently learned from them, too!). And on these topics and more she writes eloquently, succinctly and full of love and heart. Never maudlin, never trite. Just simply telling it like it is, much as one would share a conversation with a good friend over a cup of tea. Rowan wraps her words in warmth with a skill that is graceful and personal.

Whether one reads "Life in General" cover to cover, uses it as a day book or picks through the essays to find the one resonating at the moment, the reader is in for a satisfying bit of time well spent.
You don’t have to know Becca, or be familiar with her previous work, to enjoy this book. If you’re already over fifty, you’ll likely find yourself nodding in agreement at some of the things she relates – how her lifestyle has changed now that she and her husband are empty-nesters, for example. If, like me, you’re still a few years shy of fifty, there’s still a lot to appreciate. While her essays are exactly what she calls them personal reflections, they are also full of ideas, advice, and little tidbits of daily life that make you go, “Hey, I should try that,” or, “wow, that sounds so cozy.” - See more at http//www.bibliotica.com/2015/04/life-in-general-by-becca-rowan-ravenousreader-review/#sthash.TO3QGcO7.dpuf
I love a book that makes me feel comforted and validated and this is what reading "Life in General" did for me. It was almost as if Becca and I were sitting together having a cup of coffee and chatting about our lives, that feeling of being understood and knowing you aren't the only one experiencing the ups and downs, joys and sorrows, laughter and tears, of an extraordinarily ordinary life.
